DC Dawgs Officer Positions: Volunteers needed
Interested in serving on the 2008-2009 DC Dawgs board? We are still looking for a few good dawgs to help! Please find a list of officer positions along with a description of each position’s job duties below. In addition to the tasks outlined below we will have periodic board meetings to touch base and plan events for the chapter. These will be held at Penn Quarter Sports Tavern.

  • Vice President: Selected to provide leadership and continuity when the president’s term expires. Chair committees or projects as identified by the president. Preside in the absence of the president. Become familiar with the duties of the president and long-range plan of the chapter / club. Succeed the president at the end of his/her term.
  • Young Alumni Coordinator: Focuses on young alumni, (defined as any alum from the last 10 years.) Helps plan events that might appeal specifically to young alumni, and serves as the primary feedback volunteer for young alumni. Serve on the Club leadership committee and reports on young alumni activities. Plan and coordinate activities geared specifically toward alumni who have graduated within the past 10 years. Serve as main contact with the UGA Alumni Association for young alumni events.
  • Fundraising Coordinator: Plan, organize and conduct chapter / club fund raisers in order to sponsor a scholarship(s) for a local student attending UGA, to offer support to the UGA Alumni Association, and / or to fund future activities of the chapter / club.
  • Student Involvement Coordinator: Coordinate the planning of a spring reception for all students who have been admitted to UGA to provide them with an opportunity to talk with and meet area alumni. Coordinate phone calls and letters to those students who have been admitted to UGA as well as follow-up with those who have enrolled. Coordinate special projects for area students (“good luck on exams” note cards, holiday parties with the chapter / club, etc.).
  • Community Service Committee: Work with the chapter / club officers to find a project for chapter / club volunteers to participate in to benefit an organization (i.e. Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, March of Dimes, etc.). Facilitates the entire event by recruiting alumni participation and working with the Communication Coordinator to make sure that the chapter / club receives publicity for their involvement.
  • Welcoming Coordinator: A Welcoming Committee is critical to the chapter / club’s fulfillment of its objective of welcoming new alumni to the area. The committee should provide information regarding housing, school, medical, banking and recreational opportunities to alumni who are new to a respective area. The Welcoming Committee should invite and encourage alumni in the area to attend events by hosting an annual event that is directed at the new alumni. A good time for this is mid-summer after the most recent UGA graduates have relocated.
  • Publicity Committee: This committee aids not only the chapter / club, but also the public relations effort of the Association and the University. Arrange for media coverage of events when appropriate. Coordinate with the secretary in the development of flyers and newsletters for chapter / club mailing. This will include providing accurate and complete information to the Association for all mailings at least eight weeks in advance.
  • Graphic Designer: If you have a background in graphic design and would be willing to help with a handful of project throughout the year please let me know.

Dawgs Doing Good
DC Dawgs members donated nearly 100 hours of community service during 2007. Thirty UGA Alums and friends participated in events such as Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, Holiday Gift Wrapping, and serving food at DC Central Kitchen. Special thanks to Molly Bauch for coordinating! Please contact Molly if you would like to participate in volunteer events in the future.

There are several volunteer opportunities coming up in the next couple of months to help out in the community. Please visit the Events page for more details.

UGA Washington Semester Program – Mentor Opportunity

The UGA Washington Semester Program will bring its inaugural group of 15 students to Washington in January. They are excited to live, intern and take classes in DC. To make this program an unforgettable experience, they need your help!

They would like to provide a mentor for each participant- someone who does not work in their office and can be a professional contact for each student. It will be very informal- meet for coffee, attend a Washington Semester Program event, be a resource for them as they adjust to live in DC.

If you are interested, please contact Don DeMaria by email at demaria@uga.edu.
