DC Dawgs - Chapter of the Year 2009!

Dear Fellow DC Dawgs:

I am pleased to announce that our Chapter has been awarded the University of Georgia Alumni Association's Chapter of the Year Award for 2009!

I want to personally thank the 2008-2009 board for their work and dedication. This award is truly an acknowledgement of the time, talent, and resources they dedicated last year to ensure a rich experience for all area alums.

I also want to thank past Chapter presidents, Lindsay Moss and Ryan O'Neill, who worked to take DC Dawgs from the ground up. They laid a solid foundation that we were able to expand upon last year, and continue to expand upon this year.

Congrats again to the 2008-2009 board:

  • Ryan O'Neill, Past President
  • Eamon Walsh, Vice President
  • Sheridan Watson, Secretary
  • Caroline Jones, Membership
  • Robin Muthig, Golf Tournament Coordinator
  • Greg Tune, Webmaster
  • Aeron Premo, Events Coordinator
  • Charles Repine, CAN Coordinator
  • Tony Wong, Dinner Club Coordinator
  • Ben Ellis, Sports Coordinator
  • Sydney Jones, Young Alumni Coordinator

    Go Dawgs!

    Valerie
    DC Dawgs President

    Bulldog 100

    Bulldog 100
On January 30 the UGA Alumni Association announced the inaugural class of the Bulldog 100. This program honors the 100 fastest growing businesses that are owned or operated by Georgia graduates each year. More than 400 nominees representing businesses from throughout the United States were nominated.

To learn more about the Bulldog 100 please visit http://www.alumni.uga.edu/alumni/bulldog100/. A list of these “Top Dawgs” is attached for your review. The spreadsheet has several tabs. There is a tab for all of the winners in numerical order, a tab that outlines the businesses that are located in a chapter and a tab for those businesses in a club area. If you find that a graduate from your alumni organization made the Bulldog 100 please announce this in your enewsletter, on your independent website, in the emails that you send out or at an event.

Speaking of events, inviting your local Bulldog 100 member(s) to be a guest speaker at a Bulldog Breakfast Club or at any other activity would be a great idea. If the winner is a female you might want to consider a Women of UGA activity.

If you know someone who falls into the category as a possible Bulldog 100 recipient encourage them to enter for the 2011 class. The UGA Alumni Association will start accepting application on April 15, 2010. If you need more details please contact Meredith Carr ’97, Director of the Atlanta Alumni Center, at mcarr@uga.edu or 404-266-2622.

    Congratulations to the Bulldog 100!!!

    UGA Beyond Coal
In an effort to keep you informed about happenings in Athens please see the letter we received about the efforts to decrease the reliance on Coal at the University of Georgia. This letter is for information only and is not being endorsed in any way by the DC Dawgs.

    Dear Valerie,

I'm with UGA Beyond Coal. There is a coal plant on campus and we want to break our dependence so we're reaching out to alumni to sign our petition.

Using coal contributes to air and water pollution, along with high asthma and autism rates. Our power plant emits toxic air pollutants such as lead and arsenic. Soot can trigger heart attacks and strokes, cause irregular heartbeat, and lead to premature death.

We're working with the whole UGA community to encourage our administration to venture away from coal. Alumni are an integral part of our community and an interest group to President Adams, so we want to reach out to give you a chance to voice your opinions.

Here's a link to our online petition:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dEpEbl96alByNktEQ294RlZoLWs4dEE6MA Will you click the link and fill out our petition to transition UGA away from coal?

Please let me know if you want more information about the campaign or other options of support. Our main website is http://ugabeyondcoal.wordpress.com/ and a direct link to the alumni page is http://ugabeyondcoal.wordpress.com/alumni/.

    Thanks for making UGA proud,

    redandblack.com - D.C. a 'mecca' for political science majors
May 9 will signify the end of my undergraduate career at the University and the beginning of life in a scary new world marked by recession and unemployment.

My last semester could have been spent in Athens savoring the college lifestyle and the final days without a 9 to 5, but I chose instead to err on the side of preparedness and left my friends, family and the South behind to participate in the University's Washington Semester Program.
